TOP Beautiful Places to Visit in Transylvania

The Apuseni Mountains in Transylvania represent one of the most beautiful areas in Romania. A little village in the Apuseni was voted the destination of the year. And rightly so, as it offers a landscape that is rare to find in Europe.

I considered a city break in three cities of Transylvania: Timișoara, Oradea, and Cluj-Napoca, but also included objectives that are at most an hour away from these cities.

Timișoara was the European Capital of Culture in 2023

Victory Square in the city center is a promenade area teeming with bars and restaurants. At one end stands the majestic Metropolitan Cathedral. On the other side of the promenade is the building from which the 1989 Revolution started and the Hunyadi Castle, which is currently in rehabilitation.

Also, in Timișoara, we find the ruins of the former city fortress, and if you get hungry and are a fan of traditional Romanian food, enter Berăria 700. The prices are decent, and it is one place with the best roasted knuckle in the area.

If you want nightlife, Timișoara is the place to be. Along the banks of the Bega River, there are terraces that organize outdoor parties on weekend evenings, by the water. The atmosphere is extremely relaxing. Many young people take a drink from the surrounding bars and then sit directly on the grass.

Oradea

The historic center of Oradea is a tourist attraction in itself. The rehabilitated Art Nouveau buildings are reminiscent of Barcelona. It’s enough to walk the alleys in the center because at every step you find a building that surprises you.

If you’ve reached Oradea, you must also climb to the fortress, the emblem of the city. You can get there by car, not just on foot, and various events are usually organized in the fortress. We were there around Easter when we could see a wonderful, specific fair.

But for those who want a complete picture of Oradea from above, we recommend going to Ciuperca Hill. You will not regret a moment.

Beyond the city, about an hour’s drive away, hides a rare tourist gem: Șuncuiuș, a small commune that has a fine sandy beach on the riverbank. In front of the sun loungers, a vertical rock rises majestically, directly from the water. Here you can also see extreme sports enthusiasts climbing the rock or rafting in the river waters. And if you are one enthusiast, there is a rafting center here where you can go canoeing on the water.

Also near Oradea is the must-see Vida Lake, an artificial lake with a whirlpool. The green water, the surrounding forest, the photos taken here need no editing.

Last but not least, you can also go to the Izvorul Minunilor Waterfall at Stâna de Vale. From here, the water is captured, bottled, and then sold in stores.

And, of course, Oradea also means Băile Felix, where you can bathe in thermal waters.

Cluj-Napoca

Cluj-Napoca, nicknamed the Silicon Valley of Romania, has developed considerably in recent years. A city that also has rehabilitated buildings in the center, but which adds to this through visible digitalization at every step.

Our first stop was directly in the area of the Belvedere Hotel, which offers a panoramic view of the huge city. We then descended into the City Center, where we first saw St. Michael’s Church, rehabilitated with European funds. Continuing the walk along the street, we reached the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, another majestic building, in front of which is the statue of Avram Iancu and a fountain that has light shows in the evening.

Also in Cluj is the Eternal Flame, a torch that burns all the time.

A stone’s throw from the city is the local zoo, Windmill. Right at the entrance, visitors receive buckets of food for the animals. It is one of the few zoos where people are encouraged to feed and touch the animals, and you can even enter the cage of some of them.

The Destination of the Year 2024 is an Hour Away from Cluj Napoca

The commune of Rîmetea, in Alba County, offers perhaps the most beautiful view I have seen. It has a fortress and a Szekler manor with exceptionally good food, but the Trascău Peaks are the ones that truly impress: a mountainous massif that rises directly from the village, with rocky peaks and green meadows.

If you go from Cluj Napoca to Rîmetea, you can make a detour to Salina Turda, another recognized attraction of the area.

Last but not least, go to Lake Tarnița, a reservoir lake. You will not regret it!
